This section will showcase five to seven shortlisted films out of almost 400 submissions after the reviews of Mint Young Film Selector and Mint Professional Juries of eight from worldwide Open Call for Shorts.

In this section, we are dedicated to seeking Chinese films and filmmakers who demonstrate impactful cinematic expression that unfolds thought-provoking true stories with touchable and perceivable lenses.

Rule of awards: The audiences are invited to vote for their favourite one among the shortlisted films after the screening. The best short film will be awarded to the highest votes.

The announcement of shortlisted films to compete for the Audiences’ Choice Award

After a month-long open call, we are glad to announce that the first Mint Chinese Film Festival received over 400 submissions from different countries and regions. These works from talented filmmakers were judged and discussed by 14 Mint Young Film Selectors, eight Professional Juries and the Festival Committee, and a total of 5 short films have been selected for the Audiences’ Choice Award, the only competition programme of 2023 Mint Chinese Film Festival. They will compete for the title of Audience's Favourite Short Film at the festival.

The first edition of Mint Chinese Film Festival received a large number of good films and we are excited to announce the final-list of 5 short films in the Audiences’ Choice Award Competition: How I Grew Up (2021) by Yufei Liu, Second Birth (2022) by Shihan Tan, A Firecracker Story (2021) by Zhizi Hao, Hair (2019) directed by Pahriya Ghalip and Ina luna Gundersen, and NOSTALGIA (2022) by Guorong Zhang. They will compete for the Audiences’ Choice Award of Mint Chinese Film Festival 2023 on the 5th of Feb, when the screening will take place at 9:30 am at Keswick Alhambra Cinema, screen 1. The mass voting will start immediately after the 9.30am screening of the shortlisted films at 11am in Screen 1.

The best short film will be awarded a 300 GBP cash prize supported by MINT CFF and CathyPlay to support its sustainable development of film projects. Extra benefits include a one-month membership supported by *CathPlay and a five-year cinema membership(it gives 2 free tickets and discounted member prices)supported by Keswick Alhambra Cinema, plus the festival committee-supported press coverage, director’s Q&A, and touring exhibition opportunities this year.

*CathayPlay is an online streaming service that specializes in Chinese Independent films. It offers a smaller, more selective collection of films with special curations than other streaming services like Netflix, with a new film added on weekly basis. The films on CathayPlay include a mix of contemporary and classic films, some lesser-known and hard-to-find films, often with a focus on art-house.
